You’ve described your symptoms to doctor after doctor. You’ve had the labs done, filled the prescriptions, and still — something isn’t right. The answers haven’t come, and you’re starting to wonder if they ever will
What if the problem isn’t that your body is hiding the answers — but that no one has asked it the right questions?
That’s the premise behind kinesiology, and it’s the cornerstone of the work we do here at Sacred Roots Naturopathy. In this post, we’re breaking down exactly what kinesiology is, how muscle testing works, and why it might be the missing piece in your health journey.
Kinesiology is the study of human movement — but in the context of holistic health care, the term most often refers to applied kinesiology, a diagnostic technique developed in the 1960s by chiropractor Dr. George Goodheart.
Applied kinesiology is based on a foundational principle: that the body’s muscles respond to internal stressors. When the body is in balance — physically, nutritionally, and energetically — muscles test strong. When there is an underlying imbalance or stressor, muscles test weak.
By systematically testing the body’s muscle responses, a Certified Kinesiologist can identify areas of dysfunction that might not yet show up on standard lab work — imbalances in organs, hormones, the nervous system, the digestive tract, and more.
Think of it as your body’s way of raising its hand and saying, “Here. This is where I need support.”
Muscle testing is simple, gentle, and non-invasive. Here’s what typically happens during a session:
1. You remain fully clothed. There’s no equipment, no needles, and nothing to prepare. You simply show up.
2. The practitioner applies gentle pressure. Sarah will ask you to hold a specific muscle position — often extending an arm — while she applies gentle, steady pressure. The strength or weakness of your response communicates information about your body’s current state.
3. The body is systematically assessed. Using a series of muscle tests, Sarah assesses different systems and organs in the body — checking for areas of stress, imbalance, or dysfunction. Substances, supplements, or concepts may be introduced during testing to see how the body responds.
4. Patterns are identified. The results of muscle testing paint a picture — revealing which systems are under stress, what the body may be deficient in, and what support it’s asking for.
5. A personalized protocol is built. Based on what the body revealed, Sarah develops specific recommendations — nutritional, herbal, lifestyle, or otherwise — tailored entirely to you.
Applied kinesiology is remarkably versatile. At Sacred Roots, muscle testing is used to assess:
Most conventional health assessments work from the outside in — they observe symptoms, run tests, and match findings to known diagnoses. Kinesiology works from the inside out. It asks the body directly what it needs, rather than making educated guesses based on observable data.
This distinction matters enormously for people who have fallen through the cracks of conventional medicine — those whose labs come back “normal” but who still feel far from well. Kinesiology can often identify imbalances that standard testing misses, simply because it’s asking different questions.
As Sarah often says: “I ask your body where it is weak and what healing modalities it needs — rather than guessing.”
That’s not a dismissal of conventional medicine. It’s a complement to it — a different lens that reveals what other tools can’t.
At Sacred Roots Naturopathy, kinesiology testing is conducted as part of the Comprehensive Wellness Appointment — a one-hour session that combines muscle testing with a ZYTO bioenergetic scan for the most complete assessment possible.
You can expect:
Most clients leave their first session with more insight into their health than they’ve had in years. Many describe it as finally being heard — not by a practitioner, but by their own body.
Kinesiology may be a powerful tool for you if:
